May 30th - Lake Louise to Radium Hot Springs; Short Stories

1) God Bless the Granny Gear / Bénie soit la "granny gear"

There is, on some bicycle, a mysterious but wonderful gear called “granny gear”. I rarely use it on my mountain bike and it does not even exist on my road bike. But man was it useful yesterday, especially on this kind of elevation profile:

So I was cruising up the first hill when a car stopped in front of me. A Japanese tourist came out of the car and started running in my direction (it totally pissed me off since I had a good momentum going). Julie’s rule is – never stop in the middle of a hill! At first, I thought he was totally impressed with my rig and wanted to know where I was going, what I was doing, something flattering you know. Nope! He needed directions! Dude, are you kidding me? There’s one road here, how can you get lost?? Well he was totally in the wrong direction. Even if he had been right, I would have told him he was wrong, just to punish him for stopping me ;)

I have been thinking about that mix all morning. I have blueberry bagels. And I have canned tuna. Hmmmm. 12:30, I stop at the Kootenay Park Lodge, sit down at a picnic table, open my tuna can, slice my bagel in two and prepare the desired sandwich. About 15 seconds later, everything was gone. I can totally picture your reaction right now... But believe me, it can't be worse than the family that was sitting next to me. They were starring in disgust and surprise as if I was about to eat their kids as a dessert. Come on! I’ve been biking 45 miles in the wind, the sun hits hard and I’m hungry! Ok, ok.. I have to agree that biking can bring the worst out of someone. But you know what, I would eat it again. It was good.
